By Hajra Bano

In the beautiful valley of Kashmir, a young man from Dandipora district Anantnag, Muhammad Numan Chaudhary, Son of Shamshir Ahmed Chaudhary and Irshada Akhter, stepped into the world of social work after completing his higher education. With a Master’s degree in Social Science from Kashmir University and a Post-Graduation from IGNOU, Numan was driven by a strong desire to serve his community. Despite having no political background in his family, his passion for social service eventually led him toward a bigger platform—politics. In 2017, after years of working closely with people, he decided to join the Congress Party to make a larger impact on the lives of those around him.

Why Youth Participation Matters

Youth participation in politics is essential for any society, especially in a rapidly changing world. Young people bring fresh ideas, energy, and a unique understanding of modern issues like unemployment, education, technology, and environmental challenges. When youth get involved in politics, they ensure that their voices are heard and that their concerns are addressed. Young leaders challenge outdated systems and push for policies that promote innovation and positive change.

Having young representatives in government encourages more young people to vote and engage with the political process. It creates a sense of connection and representation, giving hope that their opinions will matter in shaping the future. Youth participation helps the government remain in touch with its citizens, especially when young leaders advocate for transparency and accountability.

Numan’s Journey in Politics

For Numan, stepping into the political arena was not an easy decision. He faced numerous challenges right from the start. Coming from a modest family with no political connections, he encountered scepticism from many. His father worked as a labourer, and his mother was a housewife. Despite their humble circumstances, they instilled in him the values of hard work and service to others.

As Numan began his campaign, he quickly realised that he was entering a space dominated by powerful and wealthy figures. Many questioned whether a young man like him could make a difference in politics. Could he really understand the complexities of governance? Could he compete against established politicians who had years of experience?

Despite these doubts, Numan was determined to prove himself. He relied on grassroots efforts to connect with the people in his community, going door-to-door, sharing his vision, and listening to their concerns. He understood that to be successful, he had to earn the trust of his community. This connection became the foundation of his campaign.

Overcoming the Struggles

Financial challenges were another significant hurdle. Campaigning requires resources—printing posters, organizing rallies, and reaching out to voters all demand funding. Numan didn’t have the financial backing that wealthier candidates enjoyed, so he had to be creative. He organized small community events, engaged with local youth, and used social media to spread his message. His efforts began to pay off as more people recognized his commitment to their needs.

Numan’s youth was also a double-edged sword. While it offered him a fresh perspective, it also meant that he had to work harder to convince others of his capabilities. Many older voters were hesitant to support a candidate so young, fearing he might lack the experience necessary for effective leadership. But Numan took these doubts as motivation. He believed that his experiences as a young man navigating the challenges of life in Kashmir gave him a unique insight into the struggles faced by his generation.

The New Spectrum of Youth Participation

In today’s political landscape, youth are no longer just passive observers; they are becoming active participants. Young people are not only voting, but they are also running for office, organizing grassroots campaigns, and using digital platforms to engage with the public. This shift marks a new political spectrum—one where the voices of young leaders are heard in decision-making processes.

Numan’s journey is a shining example of this new movement. His entry into politics isn’t just about personal ambition; it’s about bringing a new perspective to governance. He represents the hopes and dreams of the youth of Kashmir. His focus on education, youth development, and social issues highlights how young leaders like him can make a significant impact by being in touch with the needs of their generation.

Kashmir’s Political System and the Role of Youth

In recent years, Kashmir's political system has undergone significant changes, creating both challenges and opportunities for its people, especially the youth. The region, known for its rich history and complex political landscape, is now witnessing a growing demand for young leaders to step forward. With the restructuring of Jammu and Kashmir’s political status, the need for fresh voices that understand the aspirations of a new generation has become even more crucial. Youth in Kashmir are eager to participate in shaping their future, but the question remains—will they be given the platform to lead? Can young leaders like Muhammad Numan Chaudhary navigate the complexities of Kashmir’s political environment, where decades of conflict, unrest, and social issues still linger?

Numan, currently serving as the State General Secretary, secured his position through direct appointment, bypassing traditional nominations—a testament to his hard work and dedication.Numan, with his deep understanding of local issues and a strong background in social work, is uniquely positioned to take on this challenge. His dedication to education, youth development, and social reform sets him apart as a visionary leader. By staying grounded in his roots and staying focused on the needs of the people, Numan aims to inspire a generation of young Kashmiris to actively participate in reshaping the region’s future.

The role of youth in this evolving political system is vital. They hold the power to drive forward conversations on education reform, employment opportunities, and social justice. Their involvement can bring a new wave of hope to a region that has long struggled with instability. The future of Kashmir’s political landscape will depend largely on how successfully the youth can integrate their modern ideas into the traditional political structures. Will this new generation of young leaders redefine politics in Kashmir, or will they face the same barriers as their predecessors? These are the questions that youth like Numan are beginning to answer, with determination and vision.

Structural Challenges to Youth Participation

Despite the growing enthusiasm for youth participation in Kashmir's politics, there are significant structural barriers that often hinder their involvement. The political landscape is still dominated by established elites, making it difficult for young, lesser-known candidates to gain recognition or secure party nominations. Corruption, lack of financial resources, and limited access to political networks often prevent promising young leaders from fully engaging in the political process. Moreover, the political instability in the region adds to the complexity, as many youth feel disillusioned with the system, questioning whether real change can be achieved through traditional political means.

For individuals like Numan, these challenges pose a constant test of resilience. Though he has managed to break through by securing a position through direct appointment, many others continue to struggle against these systemic barriers. The question remains—how can the youth push past these obstacles and bring meaningful change to a region that has long been mired in political complexity?

The Impact of Youth Participation

Youth participation in politics has the power to transform a country. Young leaders bring forward-thinking solutions to age-old problems. They focus on pressing issues like climate change, mental health, and education—areas that are critical for the future of any nation. When young people are involved in decision-making, the policies that are enacted are more likely to be innovative, inclusive, and relevant to the current generation’s needs.

Muhammad Numan Chaudhary’s vision for Kashmir exemplifies the positive change that youth participation can bring. His plans to create more libraries, establish playgrounds for children, and improve educational opportunities for those in need reflect a deep commitment to building a brighter future for his community. He understands the struggles of young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and he is determined to create pathways for them to succeed.

Conclusion

The story of Muhammad Numan Chaudhary serves as a powerful reminder that youth participation in politics is not just important—it is necessary. Numan’s journey, from a social worker to a rising political figure, shows that with passion, dedication, and hard work, young leaders can overcome challenges and make a real difference. His story inspires other young people to step into politics and serve their communities, breaking down barriers and reshaping the political landscape.

As more young leaders like Numan engage in the political process, they are ushering in a new era where the voices of all generations are heard. They challenge the old ways of doing things and introduce innovative approaches to governance. Youth participation isn’t just about filling seats in government; it’s about creating a future where everyone’s needs are met, and where the aspirations of young people are recognized and valued.

In a world facing numerous challenges, the involvement of young people in politics is the key to unlocking new solutions. By embracing the passion and dedication of leaders like Muhammad Numan Chaudhary, we can build a government that is truly representative of all citizens and equipped to face the future with confidence.
